GOPIO Amsterdam Chapter organised a visit, on 28th September 2018, to the iconic 100 year old Tata Steel plant in IJmuiden in the Netherlands (around 20 minutes east of Amsterdam on the North Sea). GOPIO was graciously hosted by Managing Director of Tata Steel Netherlands, Aernout van Citters, who kindly accompanied GOPIO members on a guided factory tour. GOPIO Amsterdam was also very pleased to welcome former Ambassador of Netherlands to India H.E. Eric Niehe whose presence made the tour more special.
As one of the largest steel makers in the world, Tata Steel has a special bond with all Indians. Specially, in the Netherlands, GOPIO is very proud of Tata Steel as one of the largest employers and most respected companies employing over 9000 people at just this one site! A visit to this 750 hectare industrial was a unique opportunity for GOPIO members to get a sneak peak of the scale at which steel is produced.
After a brief introduction to the history of this Tata Steel site, the members were taken around the site with special safety gear in a guided bus. The tour was very interactive as members asked questions about the process of production, uses of steel and about the astonishing level of recycling.
The visit concluded with some networking time at the Dudok Congress Center on site along with Indian refreshments specially prepared for GOPIO by Tata Steel.
